From My Love Life Column

The following published writing samples are from my “Love Life” column that reflects my narrative writing style and “the writer side” of my personality.

  • The Name Game
If you were ever to meet my parents, you’d recognize in an instant that they were definitely not hippies—and no, they did not name me Penelope Love. When people ask me why I changed my name, I often say, “For the same reason Esther Pauline Friedman did.” You’re probably asking, “Who the heck is that?” Well, more than likely you know her…

  • See Only Beauty
To those of you who’ve seen me out frolicking bikini-clad on Fort Lauderdale Beach, I’ve also seen you—checking out my legs. Don’t be embarrassed…everyone does. I wish it were because my legs embodied the graceful power of Madonna’s, the seductive radiance of Shakira’s, the statuesque perfection of Raquel Welch’s, or even the luscious length of Uma Thuman’s. • A Friendly Riddle: What Expects Nothing and Accepts Everything?
Last week, I met a perfect stranger in a cozy Costa Rican café built from someone’s old house. Perhaps it was the chipped-white window ledges with bright blue walls, the gentle creak of the wooden floors or the scent of freshly baked empanadas and coffee in the air—something put us right at home. Amidst such comfort, our brief encounter inspired a lifetime of profound reflections on the all-important question: What is a true friend?

Scholarly & Academic

  • Hypertext* (*Opens in a new window )
This scholarly article, co-authored with Mindy McAdams when my name was Stephanie Berger, was published in the peer-reviewed Journal of Electronic Publishing in 2001. In academic circles, it is well cited, with more than 99,000 references on Google, and is often included in college curriculums.

  • Master’s Thesis PDF
I’ve included this here as a testament to my research skills, but the writing style is very academic! A shortened version was peer-reviewed and accepted to the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication (AEJMC) 2001 Annual Conference. My research looks at five ways that people respond to online journalism when articles are “lifted” straight out of the newspaper versus when they are written specifically for online media.
